Professional Training in Contemporary Dance – with Etsuko Akiya

In September 2025, the Pina Bausch Centre in Wuppertal will offer a weekly professional training session for professional dancers and advanced performers. The training takes place every Monday from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Each session is led by a different international guest teacher. The focus is on contemporary dance, technique training, physical conditioning, coordination, and artistic expression.

From 1994 to 2006, Etsuko Akiya danced contemporary dance, and since 2002 she has also been teaching both contemporary dance and classical ballet.
After training as a classical dancer in Japan, she studied contemporary dance at the Laban Centre in London, where she graduated with a Diploma in Dance Theatre. From 1994 onwards, she danced as a contemporary dancer in municipal theatres in Germany and Austria, as well as with various dance companies. She danced for Rodolpho Leoni, Stefanie Thiersch, Robert Poole, Jacopo Godani, Amanda Miller, Rui Horta, Richard Wherlock, Cathy Sharp, Etienne Frey, Samuel Würsten, Jai Gonzales, Olaf Schmidt, David Massingham, Claude Brumachon and Anselmo Zolla.
As a dance teacher, she has taught at the Schindowski Ballet, Folkwang Tanzstudio, Staatstheater Kassel, Random Dance Company, Galili Dance and Staatstheater Oldenburg, Staatstheater Darmstadt, Skanes Dansteater Malmö, Matthew Bourne and New Adventures, and the Kyoto Dance Academy. She has taught both classical ballet for contemporary dancers and contemporary dance.
