The book, recently published by Alexander Verlag Berlin, will be presented. From the publisher's announcement:
The first comprehensive publication in German about the French choreographer and Artistic Director of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch Boris Charmatz.
Boris Charmatz, who took over the artistic direction of Pina Bausch's Tanztheater in Wuppertal in the summer of 2022, has been expanding our idea of dance for over thirty years and is one of the most important choreographers of our time. Repertoire begins with the syllable ‘Re’. It stands for repetition, recurrence and recombination. For Pina Bausch's dance pieces, this means that they have to be rehearsed, critically commented on and compared with the present. This task enables Charmatz to bring together aspects of his own work: his creative approach to the dance heritage of modernism and postmodernism, his belief in the power of communities and his reflections on the body as a medium of memory.
This close-up spans a broad horizon to describe his artistic thoughts and actions: Choreography, exhibition, film, happening and mass choreography. The book brings together conversations and texts by the artist as well as echoes from companions in art and theory.
The book contains digital bonus content. QR codes lead to a digital performance room, where film clips from the archive of director César Vayssié, who has accompanied the work of the dancer and choreographer with his camera since 2000, bring important moments from three decades of dance history back to life.
