Jazz Meeting Wuppertal

Sun 02.11.25, 18:00
Pina Bausch Centre under construction, Bundesallee 260, Wuppertal
Two great music formations at the Pina Bausch Centre under construction: Giuseppe Doronzo’s Futuro Ancestrale feat. Hamid Drake and Jorrit Westerhof and Ingen Navn Trio – Experimental Flow Music.
Especially for the Wuppertal Jazz Meeting, Giuseppe Doronzo is reviving one of his favourite projects with one of his favourite musicians on guitar and drumming legend Hamid Drake. Hamid Drake is considered one of the first American musicians to have thoroughly explored playing percussion instruments from other cultures and achieved mastery in doing so.
Futuro Ancestrale is full of wonderfully confusing puzzles and unsolvable mysteries. This is mainly thanks to the rule-breaking experiments of Argentine author Julio Cortázar, and in particular his acclaimed 1963 novel Hopscotch (which gives its name to one of the most combative pieces on this album). Like this book, the music of this phenomenal trio invites multiple meanings and interpretations, enabling a bold, stream-of-consciousness approach to storytelling that opens pathways to trance-like states. But while Cortázar deliberately deals with the dispensable and superfluous, on Futuro Ancestrale everything feels indispensable, no moment wasted, not a single note or timbre superfluous.
Line-up:

Ingen Navn Trio – Experimental Flow Music
The Ingen Navn Trio plays virtuoso, sometimes atmospheric music, moving from beautiful, dreamy melodies to wild, energetic rhythmic parts and demonstrating cross-genre creativity. Meditative, deep-sounding, flowing, but also energetically moving improvisations, combined with nature sounds, are woven into compositions written by the saxophonist. With their debut album Elewha (Berthold Records), nominated for the German Jazz Award, the Ingen Navn Trio dives into the depths of the ocean and explores sunken seascapes.
The German/Italian trio studied together at the ArtEZ Conservatory in the Netherlands and discovered that they all share a joy in experimenting with music and searching for new ways and possibilities to express themselves. The name ‘Ingen Navn’ means ‘no name’ in Norwegian. For the trio, the meaning is to freely express what they feel and not be restricted by expectations, rules and constructs. Anything can happen, anything can be there, it can flow and every moment can be different, every emotion can be there. Every moment conceals different sounds, secrets that want to be played, that want to be expressed.
Filtering out what is already there. Making the intangible tangible.
With their second album ALTARA (Berthold Records), which released on 27 June 2025, they combine the energy of dance/pop with the freedom of jazz, blending elements of jazz, punk, techno, breakcore and drum “n” bass to offer intensity and depth that leaves no one untouched.
