In Germany, the construction industry generates 230 million tons of construction and demolition waste annually, making up around 55% of our total waste volume. Every year, approximately 14,000 buildings are demolished. To illustrate the scale of this issue, Architects4Future, in collaboration with other institutions, has developed the Demolition Atlas—a digital, interactive platform (www.abriss-atlas.de).

As the Wuppertal branch of Architects4Future, we invite all interested parties to join us on a city walk to explore buildings in Wuppertal at risk of demolition. Where are these buildings located, and what stories do they tell? How do vacant and endangered structures impact our city, environment, and personal experiences? What are the causes behind these demolition threats, and what solutions exist? How must building practices evolve to address these challenges?

Following the walk, we will collectively add the findings to the digital Demolition Atlas, and they will be presented at the FRAGILE 2024 festival.
