The Dorf

Wuppertaler JazzMeeting 2026

Pina Bausch Centre under construction, Bundesallee 260, Wuppertal

There are many villages, but none makes music as beautifully as this one, which is why it’s entitled to call itself The Dorf. The cheerful big band from the Ruhr region hasn’t been here since October 2021 and will celebrate its 20th anniversary at the Pina Bausch Center.

The multi-award-winning ensemble, with up to 30 members, functions like a flock of birds migrating south with extremely efficient internal navigation. Over the course of their many concerts, a unique culture of communication has developed—blending jazz, improvisation, punk, and contemporary music—which is the true secret behind this band.

The band The Dorf functions like a marketplace—people come together, new faces join in, and old acquaintances say goodbye. There are arguments, village elders, excursions, and shared meals. Tourists have to accept a certain amount of mess, bold actions, decibels, and energy in this village.

"... this band is simply a revelation—almost too good to be true…”
Weser Kurier, Oktober 2011
