For Marcel Clemens, founder of Jazz City Bilk, and the ballet directors of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Raphaël Coumes-Marquet, and Bridget Breiner, it was only a matter of time before ballet met jazz, bringing together two seemingly different forms of expression and exploring their commonalities. Starting with rhythm and tempo, it is wonderful to enter into dialogue.

Wolfgang Schmidtke composed the Bilk Suite especially for the premiere. Neshama Nashman developed the choreography for it as a pas de deux. We are delighted to be able to present this unique project again in the heart of Wuppertal dance, the future Pina Bausch Centre.

In dance and music, one finds references to the realities of life in a modern society. The hustle and bustle of a big city or the promise of a balmy early summer night, the freedom to enjoy the moment and the inspiration to simply let improvisation flow.
