What is dance theatre? And what does it mean to you?

In a series of workshops, we explore dance theatre as a vibrant, contemporary art form – open to everyone aged 16–99, with or without prior experience. Drawing on ideas and working methods from, among others, the tradition of Pina Bausch, we combine movement, language and personal stories.

We improvise alone, in pairs and in groups on contemporary issues and those from which dance theatre pieces once emerged. We work with text fragments and familiarise ourselves with small elements from existing dance theatre pieces – which we then transform and translate into our own forms of expression.

The workshop is conceived as a creative space for exploration. At the same time, it can serve as the starting point for a cross-generational dance theatre project, which is planned in collaboration with the Pina Bausch Centre under construction and the börse.

Curiosity is all you need. Your body is already telling a story.

Who?

The workshop will be led by Annika KompArt, a choreographer, dancer and lecturer. In her work, she combines contemporary dance with participatory formats, placing particular emphasis on authenticity, body awareness and collective creativity. Her artistic approach creates spaces in which individual stories become visible and can be experienced collectively.

She began researching dance theatre whilst studying for her MFA in Performing Arts at the Danish National School of Performing Arts in Copenhagen. Her interest lies in reinterpreting this genre, taking its essence as her starting point. As a choreographic assistant, she worked alongside Rainer Behr on the new production Schlafende Frau with the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch.

Annika KopArt has developed her own approach and practice involving dance, text, language and choreography, which will also be incorporated into this work.
