Looking for a Rembrandt for your stairwell or a Klimt for your bedroom? The painters from the Chinese artists' village of Dafen, near Shenzhen, are happy to help. There, copying famous artworks has become a kind of industry. Documentary filmmaker Stanislaw Mucha guides his audience through this remarkable place, which consists almost entirely of studios and galleries, using his handheld camera. The film focuses on the coexistence of art production and the people involved, and interviews explore the artists' relationship to the old masters. What's appealing is that Mucha avoids moralizing, seemingly finding it quite edifying that in China, the focus isn't so much on worshipping the original, but rather on believing that imitation can flatter it.
