Together with filmmaker Martina Kast, Wuppertal-based artist Christian von Grumbkow looks back in this documentary on a career spanning more than 50 years as a musician and painter. Friends, gallery owners, and collectors share their perspectives, while von Grumbkow himself recounts key moments from his childhood and youth. His years as a guitarist in the progressive rock band Hoelderlin are also touched upon, but the focus of the film portrait lies on von Grumbkow’s artistic work and teaching practice in his studio at Schloss Lüntenbeck. We witness the unusual painting technique behind his large-scale works and experience how von Grumbkow passes on his knowledge in courses and workshops. Paths to Color offers a multifaceted insight into the life and personality of a creative individual who has devoted his entire life wholeheartedly to art.

Films on Art 2026

The Films on Art series, curated by Mark Tykwer, was founded in 2012 and took place in the Waldfrieden Sculpture Park until 2024. Since spring 2025, it has been based at the Pina Bausch Centre under construction. The 2026 series will feature four film evenings exploring dance, reproduction, media art, and painting.
