Reading and panel discussion

Pina Bausch Centre under construction, Bundesallee 260, Wuppertal

The Equality Officers at the University of Wuppertal are hosting a reading followed by a panel discussion with SPIEGEL bestselling author and journalist Alexandra Zykunov (https://www.alexandrazykunov.de/). The starting point is her book Wir sind doch alle längst gleichberechtigt! (We’ve All Been Equal for Ages!), which takes a critical look at the persistent narrative of supposedly achieved equality.

Following a reading of approximately 45 minutes, we will explore the narrative of supposed equality in a moderated panel discussion, specifically relating it to the context of higher education and academia. The panel discussion will focus on the question of to what extent and why the notion of comprehensive equality persists within the academic system, even though empirical data and anecdotal evidence point to structural inequalities – for example, in career progression, appointment procedures, or the distribution of care work and committee duties.

The panel discussion is scheduled to last approximately 45 minutes and will be conducted in a dialogue-based format. Alongside Ms Zykunov, Prof. Dr Tutsch and Assistant Professor Maya Alam (both from the University of Wuppertal) are expected to take part in the panel discussion, as is Prof. Dr Heike Kahlert (RUB). Vice-Rector Prof. Dr Rita Casale will deliver the opening address. The discussion will be moderated by Annette Hager (WDR).

An event organised by the Equal Opportunities Officer at the University of Wuppertal in cooperation with the City of Wuppertal’s Equal Opportunities Office, Inside Out and the Pina Bausch Centre under construction.
