From 1 May 2022 onwards, more than 30 theatres across Germany will join forces with festivals, artists and freelance theatre professionals to embark on a more sustainable future. A relay race will be held along two routes through the entire country, culminating in a celebratory crossing of the finish line at the Augsburg climate festival “endlich” on 19 May. All along the routes, theatres are setting examples for more sustainability and offering a variety of creative activities, including plays about the climate crisis, lectures, panel discussions, talks, concerts and activism in public spaces.
The race was initiated by “Performing for Future – Network for Sustainability in the Performing Arts”, a group of cultural leaders and creative practitioners from the performing arts who have been meeting regularly since the autumn of 2021 to work on projects including a sustainability wiki for artists and a manifesto for ecological and social change in the performing arts.
The baton will be passed at the Pina Bausch Centre in Wuppertal on 7 May as part of under construction underdogs and role models
